FAQ

HOW LONG DOES A FURNACE AND DUCT CLEANING TAKE? Furnace and Duct Cleanings can take 2-4hrs depending on the system, how dirty it is etc...

WHAT CAN I DO TO PREPARE FOR A DRYER VENT CLEANING? Please make sure the laundry room is accessible and tidy; sometimes we need to get inside to clean If you have animals in the yard, the Clean My Air crew will need them safely in the house for this process.

HOW OFTEN SHOULD MY FURNACE AIR FILTER BE CHANGE? Air filters will need to be changed every 30-90 days depending on how busy your home is.

HOW OFTEN SHOULD WE GET OUR FURNACE AND DUCTS CLEANED? Furnace and duct cleaning plays a major part in maintaining a healthy home, and proper operation of the hvac systems. We recommend this be done every 1-3 years for the Leduc, Edmonton and surrounding areas. It really depends on the outside influences, and how busy your home is. No pets, no allergies, no kids, single person, or a couple (24-36 months) Allergies, animals, smoking, busy home, high traffic area, farmers fields out back. (12-24months)

HOW OFTEN SHOULD I CLEAN MY HRV UNIT? This unit should be checked and cleaned every 2-3 months How to Clean Them Vacuum first: Use a brush attachment to remove loose dust and pet hair. Wash: Soak them in warm, soapy water (mild dish soap works best). Dry completely: Never put damp filters back into the unit, as this can lead to mold growth inside the cabinet. Signs You're Overdue Windows are fogging up or have heavy condensation (the HRV isn't removing humidity). The house feels "stale" or holds cooking odors longer than usual. The unit is making more noise than normal (clogged filters strain the fans).

CAN YOU CLEAN DUCTS THAT CONTAIN ASBESTOS? If your ductwork has asbestos tape, you have three primary options: Sealing: Professional encapsulation to prevent fibers from escaping. Removal: Hiring a certified asbestos abatement team to safely remove and replace the affected ductwork. Leave it alone: If the tape is in good condition and undisturbed, it is often safest to leave it entirely alone until you are ready for a professional abatement. The Risk of "Inaccessible" Tape Your ductwork runs through walls, ceilings, and between floors. If there is asbestos tape on joints hidden behind drywall: It cannot be sealed: If they can't reach it, they can't encapsulate it. Agitation is the Danger: Traditional duct cleaning uses "power whips" or high-pressure air skipped through the inside of the vents. If that whip hits a joint that has asbestos tape on the outside, and that joint is slightly loose or degraded, the vibration and air pressure can force microscopic fibers through the seam and into your living space. Why "Clean My Air" Takes a Stricter Stance As noted on your own FAQ page, the policy is often "No" because: Containment: True asbestos protection requires "negative air" environments and HEPA filtration that exceeds standard duct cleaning equipment. Liability: If a company cleans a system with known asbestos and fibers are later found in the home's air, the liability is massive. The "Unknown" Factor: You cannot guarantee that the tape inside a wall isn't already brittle. Agitating the ductwork is like shaking a dusty rug—if there's a hole in the "rug" (the duct joint), the dust (asbestos) comes out. What "Protection" Usually Looks Like When a company claims to protect you while sealing, they are usually referring to: HEPA Vacuums: Using vacuums that prevent 99.97% of particles from exhausting back into the house. Wetting Agents: Spraying the tape so it stays damp (fibers don't fly when wet) while they apply the sealant. The Bottom Line: If you have asbestos tape, sealing the "visible" parts does not make the "invisible" parts safe for high-pressure cleaning. If a technician cannot verify the integrity of every single joint in the house, the safest professional choice is to decline the cleaning until the asbestos is professionally removed.

What you can do
to prepare for
the furnace & duct cleaning

  • Dogs, cats, and other animals need to be secured prior to the crew’s arrival in a safe place like a kennel, or taken outside for a walk. Doors and windows will be open during the cleaning and we don’t want your furry family members escaping! Cleanings can be a stressful time for your animals and we do our best to be considerate.

  • Please move all breakables away from supply vents and cold air returns (lamps on end tables, art work, etc.). All vents and grills must be accessible for the crew; items such as televisions, china cabinets and pianos should be moved prior to the crew’s arrival if needed.

  • Please make sure the area around the furnace is clear and accessible (approx. 3-4' all around when possible).

  • Stairways should be free and clear of all items.

  • All rooms must be accessible to the crew for the duration of the cleaning. Please ensure everyone in the household is up and finished getting ready for the day so that bedrooms and bathrooms are available.
